Gatesville - SwampFest is an old time county fair, which
was begun in the Fall of 1991. The name "SwampFest" was chosen by the Gates
County SwampFest Committee because of the many wetlands in the area that
support a wide variety of plants and animals, and which purify the water supply.
It was founded on the principle of promoting civic unity and for highlighting
Gates County's rich history and rural lifestyle. SwampFest offers three
stages, which highlight continuous free entertainment; lawn mower/tractor pulls;
a wide variety of craft vendors, food vendors, and educational exhibits; plenty
of games for children of all ages and many other activities. This day of fun for
the entire family occurs every other year at the Gates County
Community Center on US 158 adjacent to the Gates County High School. The Gates
County SwampFest Committee is composed of county residents and employees from
many of the businesses in the county. For additional information contact: Gates

December
Gatesville - The Gates County Lions Club
Christmas Parade is held annually on the second Saturday afternoon in
December. Participants in the parade come from schools, churches, and businesses
of the county, plus visitors from near-by counties and towns. Of course, the
most eagerly awaited participant of the parade (Santa Claus) always comes at the
end and greets children after the parade is over. The Lions Club has a
chicken/bar-b-que dinner as their annual fundraiser at the close of the parade.
